What is hard water?
Hard water carries a lot of dissolved calcium and magnesium.
Pakistan's national drinking water standard puts total hardness below 500 mg/L as calcium carbonate, but water inside that limit can still scale a geyser.

How a softener works

Resin bed
Water flows through resin beads that swap calcium and magnesium for sodium.

Backwash
When the resin is full, the control valve backwashes it.

Brine
Salt water from the brine tank refreshes the resin.

Back in service
The valve rinses the resin and returns to softening, on a timer or after a set volume of water.
A softener does not purify water. TDS stays about the same, and bacteria, salts and arsenic pass straight through.
For drinking water, add an RO plant or a home RO filter after the softener.
Hard water filter or water softener?
Cartridge filters sold as hard water filters can catch sediment, but only an ion exchange softener removes hardness from the whole supply.
For drinking water alone, an RO removes hardness too.

A small unit or a whole-house plant on the main line, with a manual or automatic control valve, protecting geysers, bathrooms and the washing machine.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is softened water safe to drink?
A softener adds a small amount of sodium in place of the hardness.
If anyone in the house is on a low-salt diet, ask their doctor and keep a separate drinking tap or an RO filter for drinking water.
How often does a water softener need salt?
It depends on how hard your water is and how much you use. We set the regeneration schedule at installation and tell you how often to top up the salt tank.
Will a water softener lower TDS?
No. It swaps one dissolved mineral for another, so TDS stays about the same. For lower TDS you need RO.
Do I need a softener before an RO plant?
If the water is very hard, yes, because it protects the RO membranes. With moderate hardness, antiscalant dosing in the RO plant is usually enough.
Do I need a softener if I already have an RO?
An RO only treats the water at its own tap. If scale is damaging geysers, bathrooms and the washing machine, you need a softener on the main supply as well.
What is the disadvantage of a water softener?
It uses salt, adds a little sodium to the water, sends brine to the drain each time it regenerates, and does not purify water or lower TDS.
What is the cheapest water softener?
Small shower or tap cartridges are the cheapest, but they only slow scale at one point. To protect geysers and pipes, you need a softener on the main supply.
